Private Practice Highlights
Concentrating in trial law, Barry has handled a wide variety of civil and criminal trials. The New York Times reported the case of Nigrelli v. Metropolitan Life Insurance because "A change in the practice of putting a cash premium on death soon after an accident or the onset of an illness could be forced on insurance companies throughout the nation under a precedent" the case established. Metropolitan Life had refused to pay death benefits because the policyholder did not die within one year of the onset of illness as the policy required. The Lackawanna County Court and the Superior and Supreme Courts of Pennsylvania held that it was against public policy to make it advantageous to die quickly to comply with the terms of an insurance policy.

Attorney Beemer and his wife, Diane (deceased), represented Throop, Pennsylvania residents in their successful efforts to obtain damages for environmental lead contamination from the former Marjol Battery Company site. The Scranton Times reported the litigation as "the largest piece of environmental litigation filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania" and noted the case was "cited by other federal courts throughout the United States and undoubtedly will serve as a legal foundation for future environmental cases."
